New findings in osteoarthritis research

September 2009

For the first time, using modern imaging techniques on humans, it has been shown that it is possible to regenerate cartilage, hence considerably inhibiting the progress of osteoarthritis. A clinical study carried out at the famous American Harvard University and the New Medical Center in Boston has confirmed the cartilage- supporting function of CH-Alpha® and its principal component Fortigel®. The results of these studies are currently being presented at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) congress in Montréal, Canada.

The study at both of these Medical Centers utilized the highly innovative measuring technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to confirm that cartilage could be regenerated in the affected joints of the osteoarthritis patients under investigation. In all, 30 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee participated in the clinical study over a period of 12 months. In the course of the study, neither the doctors nor the patients knew which patients were given CH-Alpha or a placebo. The results of magnetic resonance imaging showed considerable improvement in the cartilage as well as a higher density of the cartilage tissue in those patients given CH-Alpha. In contrast, the control group given a placebo showed continuous decline in the cartilage mass.

The scientific knowledge thus obtained opens up completely new perspectives in the treatment of joint disease. This is especially important as, particularly in industrialized countries, the number of patients affected will increase dramatically. This is principally due to demographic developments as the elderly in particular tend to suffer from the joint condition, but also due to people in general not exercising enough and of course to the number of overweight people.

"In contrast to other substances geared towards the short-term treatment of pain and relief of symptoms, CH-Alpha treats the root cause of the joint condition" says Dr. Klaus Flechsenhar, Head of Medical Research at GELITA AG. "The studies confirm the clinical data already obtained from other studies. This new proof that the substance is effective is a milestone in medical research."

Company profile
CH-Alpha® is marketed by GELITA Health Products USA Inc. a subsidiary company of GELITA AG. This international company located in Eberbach, Germany, is world market leader in the production of collagen peptides. GELITA AG has been carrying out basic research and clinical studies on these substances for some 25 years to demonstrate their effect on cartilage metabolism. CH-Alpha joint collagen was developed as a result of the scientific knowledge gained from this work.

Product portfolio
CH-Alpha joint collagen is suitable as a food supplement for those suffering from degenerative joint disease. Some 70% of joint cartilage consists of collagen and a further 25% of proteoglycans. Ch-Alpha contains special collagen peptides (Fortigel®). Laboratory studies have shown that these can stimulate the synthesis of collagen and proteoglycans.
